Tauranga Plumbers Turning Away Thousands of Dollars in Work

Tauranga plumbers are so busy they are having to turn away thousands of dollars worth of business every week. As building activity in the Tauranga area reaches intense heights some firms say they could potentially increase their business by 50 per cent.

The combination of a shortage of plumbers and other tradesmen, together with the rising population means plumbers are finding it difficult to keep up with the huge demand for construction services. Sam Nielson from A1 Exteriors said the large numbers of people moving to Tauranga meant the level of building activity was "nuts".

Bruce Matthews, sales for Belvedere and Eco Star Homes said that with 40,000 people moving to New Zealand every year and only 14,000 houses being built, he expected the building boom to continue.

Scott Carrus, from Carrus Corporation said there was a massive wait for builders wanting sub-trades to complete their jobs. Other builders are saying they could double their workload overnight and are picking up new staff to help with the excess of work when they can find them.

Tauranga Master Builders Association president Johnny Calley of Calley Homes confirmed the building industry was under extreme pressure at the moment and there was a longer wait than usual for sub-traders to complete their different projects.
